Buchan Caves

Buchan Caves is well worth the four hours and thirty minute drive it takes you to get there, I would strongly recommend that like us, you stay somewhere close enough to the caves such as Lakes Entrance (45 minute drive) and have the caves as a day trip and then for the rest of your stay in Lakes Entrance take advantage of the other attractions in the region. We opted for the guided tour through both the Royal Cave and the Fairy Cave and the prices where as follows: Adult $34.20, Child $19.80 or Family (2 adults, 2 children 5 - 16 years) $94.20. Worth every cent, both caves were amazing.

Yes, it is dark down there you are in a cave however they are well lit and you can take in the natural beauty of the limestone caves surrounding you and also see where your going. The paths are easy to navigate, however I would recommend you wear a sturdy pair of shoes such as a pair of runners as opposed to thongs. The Royal Caves water pools are a stand out attraction, shimmering and still as can be they are like mirages but I assure you they are really there. The tour guide is a wealth of knowledge and only adds to the enjoyment of your walk through the mystical caves, the tour guide and other members of your tour in no way detract from the mystery of the caves. Our guide was so good we actually went and spoke to him after the tour to thank him for the tour.

The Fairy Caves are more like a winter wonderland, any child there could imagine they are a character in the movie Frozen, and any adult can stare in awe in at the beauty whilst reminding themselves its not snow. The Fairy Caves are sprinkled with stalactites coming down from above and stalagmites rising from below, they are rock formations that are accumulations of different materials such as sand, mud and lava. No matter how many times the guide (and this is in no way a reflection on their delivery of information) explained the difference between stalagmites and stalactites I still confuse the two. For me personally if I had to choose between the two caves I would opt for touring the Fairy Caves, they are nothing less than spectacular.

We are going to have to go back here with our bathers as there is swimming pool which is fed by the waters from an underground stream located in the Buchan Caves Reserve. I did not even see the swimming pool, let alone take a dip in it, so it looks like come summer this is likely where you will find me.
