The Rifle Range - Point Nepean

Updated: Jul 9, 2020

Our weekend wanders took us to Fort Nepean at Point Nepean. We absolutely love exploring this place as there is always something new to see, a different path we haven’t taken before and of course it looks completely different in different weather conditions. Today was pretty cold, windy and quite cloudy but still as beautiful as always. This photo is of the Riffle Range, it’s off the usual, Defence Road and well worth the detour. In all the times I have gone and explored this part of Port Nepean I have never come across anyone else here. There were however, a lot of people walking along Defence Road enjoying being able to get out again but, please be aware that the fort section is still closed. It’s closed about 800mts before the fort so it’s not like the entrances are individually closed (that would be a difficult task). Once you get to the section where you must dismount your bike and leave it to walk the remainder of the distance to the fort is closed off with orange barriers. I missed seeing the forts but was just so pleased to be able to be there again at all. Other walks that branch off on the way to the forts, such at the Riffle Range were however open and there to explore. The Riffle Range was originally constructed in 1956-1957 for the Officer Cadet School, it was used for the cadets to train in firing rifles, sub-machine and machine guns. This is a six lane range, and yes all six lanes are still intact and is 400mts in length.
