The Long Jetty Port Welshpool

We have been waiting for just the right sunny day to visit the Long Jetty, since it re-opened late December 2018. The Long Jetty was first constructed in the late 1930’s, and then extended in the 1980’s, unfortunately due to fire damage it was closed 2003. Not knowing anything about the jetty and not knowing it had not been rebuilt and was kept well closed we visited in 2015. Luckily there are a number of other attractions in the area, and it was not a wasted visit, we had said that we would revisit once it was rebuilt and opened.

The Long Jetty is a beautiful 2.5 hour drive from Melbourne, it certainly doesn’t feel as long as it sounds with picturesque countryside as far as you can see for mush of the journey. Once we arrived, there was no shortage of information and interesting facts next to the start of the jetty, even a boat for the kids (and big kids) to play on.

At 850m in length it’s a lovely walk with the feel of fresh sea air blowing through our hair and sunshine beaming down on us we were spoilt for days to visit, however I think that any day would be wonderful for a walk along here.

This jetty certainly is not only for walkers, it’s set up to cater for some of the best fishing there is to be had. Firstly the view, who wouldn’t want to spend a day here relaxing with a rod propped comfortably on one of the many fishing rod holders that are placed along the jetty. They have even placed two excellent fish cleaning tables near the end of the jetty.

Getting back to the view have a look at the beautiful crystal clear water, and in the distance you can see Snake Island, beyond along the horizon you can clearly see Wilson’s Promontory. Next time I’m at the top of Mt Oberon I’ll be interested to see if I can see Port Welshpool.

There was not a moment that I was bored along this walk, just when I thought I couldn’t possibly be more excited we came across The Broman Diving Bell, which was once used by divers in the Bass Strait oil industry. What a great find and some really interesting facts, the children will love looking at this and reading all about it.

The Toora Wind Farm can also be seen from the Jetty, and is only a 15 minute drive back towards Melbourne and are well worth stopping in to see.
