Out of Iso Destination Number 6 - Fort Nepean

Fort Nepean is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and is a leisurely 90 minute drive from Melbournes CBD. Fort Nepean is one of the fortifications that protected Melbourne during World War I and II, and is a little like taking a step back in time. There is so much see here, that I would allow a day to explore; the gun emplacements, barracks, tunnels, ammunition magazines, engine house and even the bomb-proof room. On a clear day Queenscliff Lighthouse is clearly visible. On 17 December 1967, Harold Holt, the then Prime Minister of Australia, disappeared while swimming in the waters here. You cannot swim here nowadays, but don’t let that put you off visiting there is so much to do here. For those who would like to explore the Fort but not walk the gorgeous walk there, there is a shuttle bus and bikes can also be hired. If I have a day to myself you will often see me exploring this amazing location.
