Out of Iso Destination Number 5 - Kilcunda

This small little sleepy town is only 1.5 hours drive from Melbournes CBD and is located half way between Phillip Island and Wonthaggi, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland. Is there a pub in Australia with a better view or menu than the Kilcunda Ocean View Hotel, not one I’ve been to. Is there a more friendly and welcoming general store, cafe, post office all in one than the Kilcunda General Store? If there is I will definitely give it a try.

Kilcunda is know for its beautiful Bass Coast for beaches, rockpools, awesome views, surfing and the Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge and of course the Bass Coast Rail Trail. Kilcunda is located along this trail and a great place to stop for lunch. You can walk the full 17km of the trail from Anderson to Wonthaggi or park at different stages and walk from there. We park at the carpark at Anderson and walk to Kilcunda, which is 4km each way. The track is wide, well cared for and reasonably flat, there are however a few slight inclines along the way. The track is suitable for walkers, cyclist, horses and wheelchairs.

It’s not long before the track opens up and the clear blue waters of Bass Strait come into sight and the green rolling hills present themselves. After we do this walk we sometimes drive to nearby Shelly’s Beach and walked approximately 1km along the George Bass Coastal Walk and went down to the beach to admire the waves, I strongly suggest not to swim as it is extremely dangerous. Speaking of the George Bass Coastal Walk that is certainly another favourite of ours, the photo of this post was taken whilst doing, so as you can see the view is definitely worth doing the walk for.

The George Bass Coastal Walk actually joins onto the Bass Coast Rail Trail so you can always do a bit of both. Start from the Anderson carpark as we do, have a bite to eat at the pub or general store then continue on to the majestic cliff top walk along the George Bass Coastal Walk.
