Out of Iso Destination Number 4 - Mount Dandenong

We usually star this hike by parking on Glasgow Road, Montrose at the base of Mount Dandenong. This walk starts of steep and let’s face it reasonably hard work ends much the same. We usually go straight up the mountain, the views on the way are unforgettable and be sure to turn around and look behind you when you stop to catch your breath. It’s very rocky and in the summer months it’s very dusty whereas the winter months it can be quite slippers, watch your step no matter what time you visit. Once we reach the top (well almost the top) we walk around the mountain on some of the most stunningly beautiful tracks we have been on. I chose to post today’s photo which shows the beauty of the tracks towards the top, where the transmission towers are visible. The tracks now wind around the mountain and go up and down like roller coasters. Eventually after one more brief steep section you will reach Skyhigh and feel as though you are at the top of the world. The view from Skyhigh is unmatchable on a clear day you will get a clear view of Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay. If you look around to your left you can even see Sugarloaf Reservoir and Yarra Glen. We usually stop at Skyhigh for a cold drink and a snack, the food here is lovely. We usually wind back down the different tracks to get back to the car however, last time we went back down the way we ent up and my goodness it was harder going down than it was going up. But, if it’s a bit of adventure mixed with some serious calorie burning hiking you want, look no further this is it.

Of course the list of attractions in this area other than hiking straight up the mountain is a mile long. Of the top of my head I would suggest the following: The Mount Dandenong Botanic Gardens (formally the Rhododendron Gardens), Olinda Falls, Sherbrooke Falls, The R.J. Hamer Arboretum, Alfred Nicholas Gardens, William Ricketts Sanctuary and George Tindale Gardens. I know I have overlooked quite a few as there are just so many, if you are thinking of somewhere I’ve not mentioned it, please do add it to the comments. I can’t wait to get back up to Mount Dandenong it really is a fabulous.
