On this particular visit to the Grampians one thing we all noticed was that they were dry, creek beds reduced to paths of pebbles, some waterfalls not much more than a trickle, the once lush green grass now a shade of yellow or in parts just earth. However the Mackenzie Falls were still in a spectacular state of beauty and cascading proudly.
Anyone who has read any of my other blogs will know by now, I love a sign and who knows you may like them too so there they are above for your perusal. Mackenzie Falls are easy to get to and have a huge car-parking area, you will find it on Northern Grampians Road, Zumsteins. Once there you can opt for viewing the falls from one of the lookouts at the top or you can walk to the bottom and look up at them in all their wonder.
Our first visit here we were unfortunately time poor and had to settle with a view of the sparkling cascades from above. Now when I say settle have a look your not missing out its a sensational view. The walk to view the falls from the lookouts is easy and accessible to everyone.
Walking to the bottom gets you so close to the action that once you have crossed the large rocks in the river to reach the other side, stand back in awe of the beauty before you. You will get a refreshing spray from the falls, enough to soak you no, enough to give you a refreshing spritz yes. The walk down is steep and in parts narrow, we found everyone to be courteous so there was room for everyone. The walk back up was hot, strenuous and fast. By the time I thought I may need a breather we where at the top. I was so surprised how quickly and easily we ascended from the bottom.
Exploring down to bottom was my favourite thing to do, it was peaceful, tranquil, energizing and we were the only ones who ventured along the other tracks away from the falls.
Next time we will definitely walk to the Fish Falls, but on this occasion we had to leave something for next time.
