Long Walk, Short Walk You Choose

That’s exactly what I love about the Bass Coast Rail Trail, you can walk the full 17km from Anderson to Wonthaggi or you can park at different stages and walk from there. On our latest visit we parked at the carpark at Anderson and walked to Kilcunda, which is 4km each way.The track is wide, well cared for and reasonably flat, there are however a few ever so slight inclines along the way. The track is suitable for walkers, cyclist, horses and wheelchairs.

The beginning of the walk starts fairly sheltered from the wind and the view on this particular day was the beautiful blue sky above and the sheltering green trees lining the sides of our journey.

It’s not long before the track opens up and the clear blue waters of Bass Strait come into sight and the green rolling hills present themselves. This was although when I had to put my jumper back on, as even though the sun was shining brightly the wind was also blowing a bitterly cold chill. I love that this walk is so clear without there having to be signs everywhere leading the way. This was the first cross road we came to but there was no question as to whether we were to go straight, left or right. It was clearly straight ahead.

We always love to stop and admire this disused bridge, it was a little swampy to take photos much closer though.

Not long after the bridge you will clearly see the white fencing above. If you have small children with you now is the time for some hand holding, as this is were you need to cross over Bass Hwy, a busy road to say the least. A safe crossing nonetheless as there is clear visibility left and right to cross safely.

Whilst breathing in the fresh sea air and taking in the astonishing view of the ocean and of course enjoying your walk if you look to your left you will see both the Kilcunda Ocean View Hotel and Kilcunda General Store. I haven’t eaten in the Hotel since I was in my 20’s but I do remember that the food was amazing, and views even better. When it comes to Kilcunda General Store, I can tell you all about it as we eat there whenever we are in the area (or even passing through). It’s the better choice for us with a little one. It’s a great little coastal cafe, that’s always worth stopping for. It was actually the reason why we decided to walk from Anderson to Kilcunda. The food here is always on point and as for the serves they are huge! However the food is so delicious, there was no sharing involved and our little one finished his whole giant plate.

After all that delicious food we decided we might need to walk a little further than just another 4km. So after walking back to the car we relocated to the nearby Shelly’s Beach and walked approximately 1km along the George Bass Coastal Walk and went down to the beach to admire the waves, I strongly suggest that no one try’s to swim down here it is extremely dangerous. Dangerous in the water not admiring it from a far.

I don’t know how I failed to mention earlier the Wonthaggi wind turbines which are clearly visible for much of the Bass Coast Rail Trail walking towards Wonthaggi. There are six turbines all up. They look a lot closer in person than they do in photos, such as the one below.

Sorry, not a great photo above I’m afraid but to make up for that I can assure you that this is a great school holiday walk that will be thoroughly enjoyed by young and old. if you give it a go these school holidays let me know what you think.
