Cape Schanck

Cape Schanck is the southernmost point of the ever stunning Mornington Peninsular, just under 90 minutes from Melbourne CBD. To many the Lighthouse standing tall above the waters of Bass Strait is what attracts them to this beautiful and historic site, however it is the boardwalk that keeps reeling me back here time and time again.

As you can see the boardwalk provides you with a spectacular view as you descend to the end, at which stage you can go to the left and walk along the rocky beach which you can see in the picture above, or you can turn right and get and excellent view of Pulpit Rock.

The Pulpit Rock is a spectacular geological rock formation created millions of years ago by volcanic activity. When the tide goes out if you're game enough you could possibly get closer to it than I did when I took this photo, however this was close enough for my comfort. There is more to explore on this side of the boardwalk I think, there are many rock pools to discover which are particularly fun for children.

The walk back up the boardwalk gives you good views of the Lighthouse to your right. Ok, now is when I do get excited about the Lighthouse, last time we went we where lucky enough to go on a guided tour of the Lighthouse.

For $13.00 an adult, $7.00 for a child or $38.00 for a family (two adults, two children) it was most definitely money well spent. Climb to the lantern room of the 1859 Lighthouse where you will be kept enthralled by your tour guide. There is not a lot of room up there, whilst I did not feel claustrophobic at all, this was however the best photo I could take.

Time to head out onto the balcony you are now 21 meters high and can feel the sun on your face, the wind in your hair and can see far out to over Bass Strait.

Back on solid land can either take a stroll around the Lighthouse grounds or get a little more adventurous and take a 2.6km walk to Bush Rangers Bay.
