Cape Liptrap Lighthouse

June 2020.

Cape Liptrap did not disappoint today what a fabulous adventure we had there with a few stops to admire some other sights on the way. It was incredibly windy, but the sky was blue and the sun was shining brightly. The drive there was fairly cruisy the last 8km were down a dirt road, but it wasn’t a tricky one. The walk from the carpark is short and on a well formed and very wide gravel track, extremely pleasant. The sight at the end of the walk was this towering beauty, standing proudly 93.6 metres above sea level watching over Bass Strait. The first Cape Liptrap lighthouse was a 2.1 metre steel tower that was established in 1913 and housed an automatic acetylene light.

The current lighthouse you now see standing was constructed using cast concrete in 1951, and is 9.75 metres tall. The lighthouse was converted to electric power in 1970, and emits one flash every 12 seconds.

Last time we went it was pouring with rain and blowing a gale, we attempted to take our umbrellas and have a look but it ended in our umbrellas blowing inside out and us soaked. We will remember this trip with fonder and much drier memories. @ Cape Liptrap Lighthouse #southgippsland #promcountry #Lighthouse
